Life is really hard when you discover that your family is rich and two women are vying for his love. Two of you are in tango and three of us are the audience, and the two are tango. Behold – the best love triangles on Broadway!
Monty Navarro is torn between two pieces of gold – a rich couple and a poor one. Neither woman knows anything about the other as they try to win his affection while he continues to climb the social ladder by murdering anyone who is in his family’s fortune. I am happy for women to learn from each other and keep the triangle going, but I am sad if they don’t.
When we meet Natasha for the first time, she is in love with her fiancé Andrei, but when he goes to war, he starts an affair with Anatole, an aristocratic bad boy with whom she has fallen in love. She even breaks off her engagement to her new beau, and is prepared to overlook his selfish and self-serving qualities. When Pierre tries to persuade Andrey to bring her back, this tragic story falls on deaf ears. Maybe it’s because they’re already married, and who could blame him?
Three years have passed since the end of the war, and the GI’s have gone to Vietnam, but they are still in love with each other, even after three years.
What they don’t know is that Chris is now married and Kim’s whole world depends on whether Chris comes back to her or not.
While we are deeply saddened for Kim, we also feel for Ellen who is wondering if she should be the stand-in. The lovers are reunited in tragic circumstances when Kim takes her own life and dies in Chris’ arms.
Meanwhile Freddy (Eynsford Hill) falls in love with her and even wants to marry her, but Eliza is furious that Henry Higgins has won a bet on the side. Despite all the hard work he has done, Higgins continues to release her and sends her straight into Freddie’s arms.
It is only at this point that he realizes that it is not the most romantic gesture and apologises, but he is so embarrassed that his face gets used to it.
I just want to say that there are strong arguments for Team Freddy, and that’s simply because it’s so much more than just a love triangle.
The triangle is made up of a star – crossed lovers, and we all know how well that usually works, don’t we? Unfortunately, both lovers are sentenced to death for alleged treason, but the two become friends, making them the perfect combination. When Aida adds more oil to the flame, she becomes Amneris “maid and his best friend. Although he loves them both, he cannot convince his father to let them die together and leaves them.
Penny even manages to separate the pair and send both dancers straight back into each other’s arms. The triangle between Benny, Mimi, and Roger focuses on the fact that there is nothing quite like tango and Maureen. Benny does everything to get Roger out of her psyche by telling him that he is her last friend.
It takes a while for Mimi to realize that Roger doesn’t want to live with her and to make her forget the past. I know it’s hard to be in an old love triangle, but the other woman is like a sister to me.
The best love triangles on Broadway are an integral part of some of the greatest plays that were ever put on stage!
