Broadway shows are always impressive not only because of the brilliant actors but also because of the spectacular scene décor and the amazing costumes. To visit a Broadway show is an experience that anyone in New York should not miss. Let’s find out the Broadway shows with the best costumes.

Hamilton

Hamilton is an American musical that premiered on the 20th of January 2015 in The Public Theater, NYC. It tells the story of Alexander Hamilton – one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. The musical combines different music styles – hip hop, R’n’B, pop. The production won several awards including Best Costume Design.

Paul Tazewell designed the costumes for the show. They are inspired by the fashion during the 18th century. Alexander Hamilton wears a suit with a buttoned waistcoat in green because green is the color of money and Alexander Hamilton is on the 10-dollar bill. Women are dressed in skirts combined with buttoned waistcoats in the same color.

The Phantom of the Opera

The Phantom of the Opera is a musical based on the book with the same title written by Lloyd Webber and Richard Stilgoe. The musical premiered in London in 1986 and continues to be a part of the Broadway program even today. In 2012 the production celebrated its 10 000th Broadway performance.

In 1988 The Phantom of the Opera won the award for Best Costume Design. Maria Bjornson was the designer. She succeeded in creating looks which capture the emotion of the romantic love story between Christine Daae and the Phantom. The costumes are lavish and exquisite – as was the fashion in Paris in the 19th century.

Wicked

Wicked is a Broadway musical based on the novel by Gregory Maguire “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The show’s premiere was in 2003. Wicked tells the story of Elphaba and Galinda – two witches who have so little in common that their friendship seems to be impossible. The show won the award for Best Costume Design in 2004.

The costumes from the musical were designed by Susan Hilferty. The plot is about two witches in the Land of Oz, so Susan had to make costumes that match the fictional world of Oz. The looks are inspired by the Edwardian era. Elphaba wears a long black dress with black boots and a black pointy hat. She is all dark and mysterious while Glinda is light and friendly. She is dressed in a magnificent Dior gown. 

Aladdin

Aladdin is a Broadway musical that premiered at the Fifth Avenue Theater in Seattle in 2011. It is based on the Disney animated film. The story is about a poor young man who lives in the fictional city of Agrabah. The man has the opportunity a genie in a lamp to satisfy his biggest three wishes.

The costumes from the show are a wonderful recreation of the Arabian culture. The actors are dressed in bright, vibrant clothes made from brocaded fabric. Gregg Barnes is the designer of the costumes.
